Peruvian-born photographer Mario Testino, famous for his high fashion editorials, is now focusing his attention on the culture and heritage of his homeland.
He currently has a gallery show in Lima called, Alta Moda or High Fashion, which features the traditional costumes worn by people in the Andes mountains in the Cusco region of south-eastern Peru.
“When you start looking at these outfits it’s amazing the amount of information they carry, the history they have with them, the glorious colours that they have with them and they are part of our inheritance. They all tell a story of who this woman is, what neighbourhood or what community she comes from,” Mario Testino
The gallery is part of Testino’s arts foundation, MATE (Mario Testino Museum), located in a restored 19th Century building in the city’s historic seaside district of Barranco. The museum also features images of Kate Moss, Gisele Bundchen, Princess Diana and other celebrities he has photographed.
